Ramoji Rao, Media Mogul And Owner Of Ramoji Film City, Passes Away At 87

Known for his significant contributions to Telugu media and journalism, Ramoji Rao also led the widely circulated Eenadu newspaper and Ushakiran Movies production company

Ramoji Rao, the head of ETV Network and Ramoji Film City, passed away at the age of 87 while receiving treatment in Hyderabad today. He was taken to Star Hospital in Hyderabad on June 5 after experiencing high blood pressure and breathlessness, but he died in the early hours today.

His body has been moved to his residence at Ramoji Film City, where several prominent political leaders and film personalities are expected to arrive today to pay their final respects.

Senior BJP leader G. Kishan Reddy expressed condolences on his death and praised his “remarkable contributions” to Telugu media and journalism, describing them as “commendable”.

“Saddened by the passing of Shri Ramoji Rao garu. His remarkable contributions to Telugu media and journalism are commendable. My deepest condolences to his family members,” Mr. Reddy posted on X.

Ramoji Rao, born in 1936, led the Ramoji Group, which owns Ramoji Film City, the largest film production facility in the world.

He also served as the head of Eenadu, one of the largest circulated Telugu-language daily newspapers. In the 1980s, the rise of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was closely associated with support from the Eenadu newspaper group.

He was known to be close to former Andhra Pradesh chief ministers NT Rama Rao and Chandrababu Naidu, as well as several other prominent political and film personalities. In addition to leading ETV Network, he was also at the helm of the production company Ushakiran Movies. Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, as he was also known, received the National Award and two Filmfare awards during his career.

He produced approximately 50 films and telefilms during his career. In 2016, he was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions to journalism, literature, and education.
