Scenes of panic and confusion broke out on a Kaushambi highway on May 15 when huge sums in Rs 500 bills blew in the air. Observing all the money floating around, eyewitnesses claim that it looked like a rain of money. This attracted many people who tried to get over the barriers and grab as much cash as possible, some of them even dangerously crossing roads while cars were moving.
Authorities said the money trail reportedly started after a businessman named Bhavesh got involved in an incident while traveling between Varanasi and Delhi on a luxury bus. Preliminary information released by authorities says that the incident happened as Bhavesh stopped the bus to have a meal at a roadside dhaba.

After that, the suspects allegedly ran with the bag he had on him, which he claimed had Rs 8-10 lakh inside. When escaping, some of the money fell out on the road and caused a rush among those present. “More than one and a half lakh rupees were found scattered all over the highway,” Kokhraj police told me, mentioning the case is under investigation to find the cause.
Footage of the incident being shared on social media caught many people racing to pick up the cash fallen on the road. People of all ages were running around in all directions, some even trying to avoid vehicles that were moving around them.
Police showed up shortly thereafter and started asking the businessman questions. Officials did not yet know if the missing funds were robbed or fell by mistake, according to NDTV India. Police are checking CCTV footage from around the dhaba to help with the investigation.
