PM Modi Calls For Faster Verdicts On Crimes Against Women Amid Kolkata Rape-Murder

PM Modi also took the opportunity to highlight the government’s efforts over the past decade to reduce delays in the justice system.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for swift judicial decisions in cases of crimes against women, stating that quicker verdicts are essential to ensuring their safety. Speaking at an event marking 75 years of the Supreme Court in Delhi, he highlighted that atrocities against women and the safety of children remain serious societal concerns.

Strengthening Judicial Mechanisms for Women’s Safety

The Prime Minister pointed out that while several laws already exist to protect women, including the 2019 law establishing fast-track courts and witness deposition centers, there is a need for stronger enforcement. He urged district monitoring committees to take an active role in ensuring faster verdicts in cases involving women’s safety. “The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get,” Modi said.

Mamata Banerjee’s Call for Tougher Central Laws

The Prime Minister’s comments come in the wake of widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a woman doctor in a Kolkata government hospital. A day prior, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had written to Modi, urging the introduction of more stringent central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder. She expressed disappointment over not receiving a response to her previous requests on this issue.

Government Response: Focus on Implementing Existing Laws

In response to Banerjee’s letter, the central government reiterated that existing laws are robust enough to handle such crimes if implemented effectively. Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, emphasized the importance of state governments enforcing these laws rigorously to strengthen the criminal justice system and bring perpetrators to justice.

PM Modi’s Commitment to Judicial Reforms

PM Modi also took the opportunity to highlight the government’s efforts over the past decade to reduce delays in the justice system. He noted several initiatives aimed at improving judicial infrastructure, all with the goal of delivering justice more swiftly.
