New Delhi: Border Security Forces personnel on Wednesday night opened fire on a drone coming from the Pakistani side, following which the drone went back from where it was coming from.

According to reports, troopers of 73 Battalion of BSF at Shahpur border outpost saw the drone coming from across the border and started firing towards it, forcing it to return back.

DIG Prabhakar Joshi of BSF Gurdaspur sector said, “At around 11:15, when the soldiers heard the sound of the drone, they fired 10 rounds, due to which the drone went back to Pakistan.”

A search operation has also been initiated in the area to check if the drone dropped any object in the nearby area.

107 drone spotted till July

According to the BSF, 107 drones flying from the other side of the border were observed inside Indian territory till July of this year, compared to 97 drones spotted the entire last year.

The security body spotted 97 drones coming from across the border along the International Border (IB) in 2021, including 64 in Punjab, 31 in Jammu, and two entering from the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu.

Officials say the majority of these drones are from Pakistan and are used to smuggle narcotics, weapons, explosives, and ammunition.
