Pahalgam Welcomes 60 Delegates From 2,400 Tour Operator Companies To Revive Kashmir Tourism

In the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, which led to widespread panic and nearly 90% cancellations in Kashmir's tourism sector, Pahalgam has now welcomed 60 delegates representing 2,400 tour operator companies as part of a major effort to revive the region’s vital tourism industry.

In a strategic move to rejuvenate the beleaguered tourism sector of Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a pivotal meeting with tourism stakeholders from across India in the picturesque Valley of Pahalgam. This initiative comes on the heels of a tragic incident that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, in April, significantly impacting the region’s tourism sector.

The delegates, on a three-day visit to the Kashmir Valley, will have a firsthand experience of the current situation to convince their customer base to visit Kashmir.

During a press conference, CM Abdullah emphasized the importance of tourism as a vital economic activity that provides livelihoods to countless individuals in the valley. He said, “Tourism should be viewed through the prism of economic activity rather than politics. Our aim is to ensure that it remains insulated from any conflict-related issues.”

The Chief Minister apprised about the ongoing discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding forthcoming measures to bolster tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. While specifics were not disclosed, Abdullah assured that significant decisions would soon be announced to enhance tourist safety and confidence.

National tour operators from different parts of the country echoed the sentiment, expressing optimism about revitalizing Kashmir’s image as a safe travel destination. “We are here to disseminate a positive message: ‘Chalo Kashmir’,” they expressed, hopeful that their suggestions to the government would facilitate a resurgence in tourist arrivals.

The JK Cabinet’s meeting in Pahalgam aimed to convey two crucial messages: first, that the government remains undeterred by terrorist threats, and second, that normalcy is being restored to encourage tourists back to the region.

With over 95% cancellations reported across hotels in Kashmir following recent attacks, many hoteliers, pony riders, and Shikara operators face dire circumstances. The Chief Minister’s commitment to reviving tourism signals hope for these stakeholders as they navigate this challenging period.

Alongside the preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, Abdullah informed that robust arrangements are in place for a smooth and secure pilgrimage. The overarching goal remains clear: to restore faith in Kashmir as a premier tourist destination while ensuring the safety and well-being of all tourists.
