The Weather Department has forecasted an active monsoon phase, starting June 15 to 17. Heavy to extremely intense downpours are likely to be witnessed over the southern peninsula of India and Konkan & Goa.
Delhi received light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds on Sunday morning. The showers brought an end to the intense heatwave spell, providing much-needed relief to residents from the scorching heat. Delhi had been reeling under extreme heatwave conditions over the past week, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius. Some areas in the national capital recorded temperature above than 45°C. It appears that Delhiites will continue to experience extended relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall for the upcoming week (June 16-22).
The monsoon is expected to reach parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha in the next two days, and over West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar during the subsequent 3 days.
According to the IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa between June 18 and 20; Madhya Maharashtra from June 17 to 20, and again between June 17 and 19. Very heavy showers are likely at isolated places in Konkan & Goa on June 16 and 17; Madhya Maharashtra on June 15 to 16; and Gujarat on June 15 and 16. Additionally, extremely heavy rainfall — exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours — is likely at isolated locations in Konkan & Goa during June 15 to 16.
