Mohanlal Breaks Silence On Hema Panel Report, Urges ‘Don’t Destroy Malayalam Industry’

The Hema Committee Report, which alleges sexual exploitation and harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry, has ignited widespread outrage.

Malayalam actor Mohanlal made his first public appearance on August 31, days after resigning as the President of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). Speaking on the findings of the Hema Committee Report, which exposed cases of sexual assault in the Malayalam film industry, Mohanlal urged the public not to focus solely on AMMA or “destroy the industry.”

Call for Cooperation Amidst Investigations

Mohanlal, who stepped down on August 27 citing moral responsibility, emphasized that AMMA alone cannot answer all the questions raised by the report. “We welcome the Hema Committee report. It was the right decision by the government to release that report… Those responsible will be punished; the investigation is ongoing,” he said.

A Collective Responsibility for the Industry

Addressing the media, Mohanlal acknowledged the hard work of many in the industry and requested that the actions of a few not tarnish everyone involved. He added that AMMA is fully cooperating with the investigation and that the Malayalam film industry as a whole must be held accountable, not just the association.

Mass Resignations and Leadership Transition in AMMA

In response to the controversy, the entire governing body of AMMA, including Mohanlal, resigned. A statement from the association expressed hope for new leadership that would “renew and strengthen” AMMA. A general body meeting is scheduled within two months to select the new governing body.

Mohanlal’s comments come at a time when the Malayalam film industry faces significant scrutiny, and efforts to address the systemic issues highlighted in the report are underway.
