Meghalaya police have arrested Sonam Raghuvanshi and four others in connection with the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon. A court in Shillong has sent all five accused to eight days of police custody. In an exclusive video interview with NDTV, Davis NR Mark, DIG Shillong Eastern Range, gave several significant details on the case.
In the investigation, it was suspected that Sonam orchestrated her husband’s murder together with the other accused and disposed of the body. Police discovered Sonam’s mangalsutra (wedding necklace) and ring inside a suitcase in the room of the homestay given the couple stayed at the homestay, and it is unusual for a married woman to carry her mangalsutra in a suitcase. Sonam and the killers stayed at nearby hotels, while after the murder Sonam took a taxi to Guwahati.
As reported by Davis NR Mark, all the accused persons including Sonam, have confessed to the crime. The initial investigations show that the motive for the murder was related to an inappropriate relationship. Police of course would want to find out how much was paid to the hired guns and how Sonam contacted them.
After the incident Sonam made her way from the murder scene to Shillong and took a taxi to Guwahati railway station. The accused blamed each other and Sonam disposed of two of her phones and Raja’s phone after the murder. The last positioning on all four phones was near the murder scene. Sonam had done extensive online searches into the murder scene and the place where Raja ended up ultimately killed.
Police are also investigating who booked Sonam’s return ticket, who’s phone Sonam used to contact Raj Kushwaha on the train, and police are tracking down the taxi driver who took Sonam to Guwahati railway station to make a statement. This case is still an active investigation and police are still trying to uncover every possible lead.
