Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. His death was confirmed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he was taken after experiencing a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead later that evening.
In response to his passing, the Indian government has declared a half-day holiday for all government offices and Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) on December 27, 2024, as a mark of respect. This announcement comes as part of a seven-day mourning period observed nationwide to honor Singh’s contributions to the country.
Singh served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and was known for his significant role in liberalizing the Indian economy. He was the first Sikh to hold this prestigious position and led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government during his tenure.
His last rites are scheduled to take place at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi, where many leaders and citizens are expected to pay their respects. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with leaders expressing their sorrow over the loss of a respected statesman who played a crucial role in shaping modern India.
