Madhya Pradesh: Driver Escaping Without Paying For Fuel Runs SUV Over Police Personnel

Following a high-speed pursuit a police squad successfully apprehended Singh when the Bolero he was driving overturned.

On Thursday in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, a police officer lost his life after being struck and killed by an SUV that fled a fuel station without paying. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Naresh Sharma, aged 52, attempted to halt the vehicle at a checkpoint, but the driver intentionally collided with him before escaping, according to law enforcement officials. Tragically, Sharma succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The alleged perpetrator, identified as Lokjeet Singh from Gadarwara in the neighboring Narsinghpur district, was reported to be under the influence of alcohol, as per the police.

Following a high-speed pursuit spanning 60 kilometers, a police squad successfully apprehended Singh when the Bolero he was driving overturned. Prior to this, Singh had collided with two motorcycle officers who attempted to halt him, hit pedestrians, broken through a toll booth barrier, and struck a cow before ultimately fatally running over ASI Sharma, according to the police.

ASI Sharma, in response to a Dial 100 alert reporting a Bolero driver fleeing after refueling, took swift action. The driver had reportedly attacked and injured fuel pump staff who attempted to intervene. Setting up a checkpoint in front of Mahuljhir police station, ASI Sharma and his team observed the SUV approaching at high speed. Despite signaling the driver to stop, the individual chose to accelerate, colliding with ASI Sharma and fleeing the scene.

The impact caused severe injuries to ASI Sharma’s face and head. He was immediately transported to Chhindwara district hospital, approximately 100 kilometers away, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Initially booked for attempted murder, the charges were later elevated to murder under IPC 302 following ASI Sharma’s tragic demise.
