India Summons US Diplomat Over Remarks Regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest

The Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena following Washington's remarks on Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate for the liquor policy scam.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Gloria Berbena, the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States. This action followed remarks from Washington criticizing the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate in relation to the liquor policy scandal. The meeting with Berbena at the Ministry lasted approximately 40 minutes, according to sources.

The meeting happened following comments from a US State Department spokesperson about monitoring reports on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest, emphasizing the need for a fair legal process. The comments from the US State Department followed shortly after Germany’s Foreign Office emphasized that Mr. Kejriwal, like any other Indian citizen facing charges, deserves a fair and impartial trial.

The Indian government responded firmly, summoning the German envoy and condemning the Foreign Office spokesperson’s statement as “blatant interference in internal matters.” The Ministry of External Affairs asserted that such remarks are viewed as interference in the country’s judicial process and undermine judicial independence, labeling biased assumptions as unjustified.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested last week by the Enforcement Directorate over the liquor policy scandal, stirring up turmoil within his AAP party and drawing furious protests from the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election. He has been sent to jail until March 28th this week.
