IIT Bombay Hostel Council Imposes Fine Of Rs 10K On Student For Eating Non-Veg At Veg Table

The council also sought assistance from student representatives to identify the remaining two students involved.

The mess council of hostels 12, 13, and 14 at IIT-Bombay has taken disciplinary action against a student for ‘unruly behavior’ and ‘flouting mess norms.’ The student, along with two others, protested against the segregation of eating places in the mess by consuming non-vegetarian food in the designated vegetarian area.

Fine and Disciplinary Action

One student from Hostel 12 has been fined Rs 10,000 for this act, while disciplinary action will be initiated against the two others once they are identified, as per the council’s minutes. The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, a student collective on campus, criticized the hostel administration’s actions, likening them to upholding untouchability in modern times.

Campus Council Meeting

A council meeting, attended by four professors, including the warden, and three student representatives, was convened on Sunday to address the ‘unruly behavior’ and ‘violation of mess rules.’ The resolution’s minutes indicated that the student in question deliberately disrupted the dinner on September 28, premeditating an attempt to disrupt peace within the mess.

Appeal for Cooperation

The council also sought assistance from student representatives to identify the remaining two students involved. They urged students to cooperate to maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the mess. The students had been protesting the mess council’s decision to allocate six tables for vegetarian food in the common mess of the three hostels, raising concerns of discrimination.

Protest and Controversy

In response, a few students engaged in ‘individual civil disobedience’ by consuming meat in the designated area, with others opting for vegetarian food in solidarity. The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle plans to protest the council’s decision to impose a penalty.
