Failed In 33 Exams Including AIEEE, Banking, UPSC; Meet Aditya Kumar Who Became IPS Officer In 4th Attempt

Aditya Kumar from Ajitpura, Rajasthan, persevered through 30 failures in exams before successfully entering the IPS cadre through the UPSC in 2017, securing the 630th rank in 2018. He currently serves as an ASP in Sangrur, Punjab.

This is the story of a boy from a small village in Ajitpura, Hanumangarh district, Rajasthan, 14 years ago. After he passed 12th grade, he set a goal for his life: he wanted to get into government service, specifically aiming for the UPSC. He started preparing and filling out forms for government posts. Months later, he sat for his first exam, fully prepared, and failed. He persisted through this cycle for thirty exams, facing setbacks each time.

Facing failures of this magnitude—30 failures—is enough to deter anyone. But this boy never lost his resolve. He did not give up after the repeated failures in different exams. He prepared himself to face a bigger challenge, to clear the UPSC exam. He left his village in 2013 and came to Delhi to prepare for it. He did not give up mid-way after setbacks; instead, he faced the third consecutive failure in the UPSC exams. People laughed at him and asked how a person who couldn’t pass ordinary exams like these could tackle such a daunting one like the UPSC.

Failing thirty ordinary exams and three times in UPSC, in 2017 he took his fourth attempt and turned the tide. This time, he not only cracked the UPSC but also made it into the IPS cadre due to his rank. He secured the 630th rank in the 2018 UPSC results.

Turning Setbacks into Success

In an interview, IPS Aditya revealed his failures which were around 30 in number. These included the All India Engineering Entrance Exam and Central School Organization, banking exams, among others. In 2014, when he first attempted the UPSC exam, he couldn’t clear the prelims. Likewise, in 2015, though he passed both prelims and mains, overconfidence led to his failure in the interview. The 2016 examination too did not go well for him. However, in 2017, Aditya finally made it through.

Aditya Kumar is presently posted as an ASP in Sangrur district, Punjab. Coming from a Hindi medium background, he has set the example that there are no bounds to trying. His success simply tells that so long the determination and passion for reaching out to your goal is alive within you, keep striving honestly; ultimately, you shall reach your destination. Right from his childhood, his parents, teachers themselves, have instilled the fact in Aditya that hard work is the only way to achieve something.
