Extensive Mock Drills Conducted At Dal Lake Amidst Indo-Pak Tensions

Tourism police officials explained that these mock drills are part of a routine practice, especially in light of recent drowning incidents attributed to sudden gusty winds.

Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake was alive with activity as joint teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Tourism Police, Civil Defence, and Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted extensive mock drills aimed at enhancing preparedness for emergency situations. The drills took place in the bustling waters of the lake, where shikaras filled with tourists and locals typically navigate.

Tourism police officials explained that these mock drills are part of a routine practice, especially in light of recent drowning incidents attributed to sudden gusty winds. However, the timing of this particular drill coincided closely with directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), urging all states and union territories to conduct such exercises in order to bolster their readiness for any unforeseen circumstances.

SSP of Tourism Police, S.D. Chowdhury, while explaining the importance of these drills, told News24, “We regularly conduct these mock drills to ensure that our personnel are prepared to assist the public, particularly in crowded areas like Dal Lake.”

The urgency of these preparations is underscored by heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly following the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. As ceasefire violations have escalated along the Line of Control (LOC), there is a palpable sense of unease, with calls for action against terrorist groups operating from Pakistan growing louder across India.
