An 84-year-old woman donated one of her kidneys to her 50-year-old daughter, who was suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Jaipur, said health officials, adding that the transplant was successfully conducted by the Urology and Nephrology Department of SMS Medical College, Jaipur.
Officials said that the woman’s health had been deteriorating for the past few months and she would have died if the kidney transplant had not been conducted. While searching for a donor, the doctors ended up at the woman’s mother, who happily agreed to donate her kidney, saying, “If I can save my daughter, and my life can save hers, I am ready.”
When Dr. Dhananjay Agarwal of the Nephrology Department counselled the elderly woman, he found that she was mentally prepared and medically fit. Following this, Dr. Neeraj Agarwal of the Urology Department and his team skilfully completed this difficult transplant surgery.
Dr. Neeraj Agarwal stated, “It is uncommon to have any organ donation occur at this age. The confidence, mentality, and physical fitness of the donor have demonstrated that age is just a number, and her donation stands as an inspiration not only for medical science but for human values.”
The 84-year-old woman was transferred to the Urology ICU post-surgery, where she was discharged after three days of supervision. Her daughter is currently being treated in the Nephrology Transplant ICU, and the doctors said that the kidney was functioning well and soon she will be ready for post-transplant recovery.
Dr. Shivam Priyadarshi, Head of the Department of Urology, said, “This case can be a light of hope for all CKD patients and their family members, who feel like their advanced age gets in the way of organ donation.”
Dr. Vinay Malhotra, medical superintendent of the Super Speciality Hospital, and Dr. Deepak Maheshwari, principal of SMS Medical College, congratulated the whole transplant team for their courageous decision and successful surgery.
