Court Orders Release Of Pune Teen Accused In Porsche Crash, Deems Remand Order Illegal

Justices Bharti Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande, in their ruling, stressed that despite the tragic accident, the minor should not be kept in an observation home.

The Bombay High Court issued a ruling on Tuesday, ordering the release of the juvenile accused in the Pune Porsche accident case. The court deemed the remand order unlawful and overturned it.

The 17-year-old boy’s late-night drive in a Porsche on May 19 resulted in the deaths of two 24-year-old engineers and triggered nationwide outrage. The accused teenager was remanded by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) following public outcry over the swift bail initially granted in the case.

Justices Bharti Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande, while granting relief, emphasized that despite the unfortunate accident, the minor should not be detained in an observation home. They have directed the Juvenile Justice Board to release the teenager.

As the minor’s parents and grandfather are currently in jail, custody of the teenager has been awarded to his paternal aunt.

Earlier, the teenager, son of a prominent Pune realtor, was granted bail within 15 hours of the accident. The bail conditions imposed by the Juvenile Justice Board were widely criticized as inadequate and sparked considerable outrage. He was required to write a 300-word essay on accidents, collaborate with traffic police for 15 days, and undergo counseling for his drinking habit.
