IUML plea stated that the acts and rules of the CAA implemented by centre would result in establishment of significant rights and the granting of citizenship exclusively to individuals of specific religions.

It claimed that this will in turn create a “fait accompli situation” during the ongoing proceedings of the current Writ Petition.

IUML told top court that they have already filed a writ petition against the news law on the very day it got to the President’s assent in December 2019. They also stated that in response to their petition, the court also issued a notice summoning Centre for its response. The Centre had then informed the apex court that the rules are yet to be made so the implementation will not take place.

They also stated that the petition is pending for the past 4.5 years.

IUML petition claimed that the new law implemented will create a fast-tracked process for the grant of the citizenship to the people who are covered under the exemption created by Sections 2 (1)(b) of Citizenship Act.
