New Delhi: The Surat Sessions Court Monday extended bail till April 13 granted to former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case. The next hearing will take place on May 3.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi appeared in the Surat Session court to appeal against the decision. The court gave a period of 30 days to Rahul Gandhi to appeal its order. Gandhi was sentenced of two-years of jail for his controversial remarks.
Following the conviction, the Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha and his constituency, Wayanad, was announced vacant.
Gandhi urged the court in Surat to set aside the verdict so his membership can be restored. The remarks were allegedly seen as a derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress Delegation Reached
As reported earlier, Congress’ top leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Chief Ministers of three Congress-ruled states – Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu —- accompanied Rahul Gandhi.
Along with top officials, other Congress leaders as well as supporters gathered outside the court to support the Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress delegation was accused of going Surat with the intentions of ‘pressurizing the judiciary’. Reacting to which, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said they will be there to shore up ‘a significant leader of their party’.

He said, “No one can pressurise judiciary. We are going to Surat. Congress is the main opposition party and Rahul Gandhi is big leader of our party. This is not a political drama. We stand by him…”
