New Delhi: Bombay High Court gave a big blow to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The court reverted Uddhav’s decision to increase Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wards to 236 from 227.
Uddhav Thackeray, when he was the Chief Minister, increased the number of wards from 227 to 236 by delimiting BMC wards. As per the High Court order, BMC will have 227 wards instead of 236.
After Eknath Shinde came to power in Maharashtra, the government reversed the decision of 236 wards in BMC. After this former councillor, Raju Pednekar from the Uddhav faction challenged the decision in the Bombay High Court.
With this decision of the Bombay High Court, the way for BMC elections is being considered almost clear. The matter was pending in the High Court for the last several months. Today the court has given its verdict. Now it has to be seen whether the Uddhav group challenges this decision in the Supreme Court or not.
Significantly, the Congress party along with the BJP had objected to increasing the number of Mumbai BMC wards from 227 to 236. The BJP alleges that the Uddhav government had taken this decision for political gains. BJP said that the Uddhav government had increased 9 seats for political gains.
