New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Cheif Minister MK Stalin Sunday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging that the “efforts to impose Hindi” should not be “taken forward”.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Tamil Nadu CM listed a number of possible drawbacks after rolling in the recommedations by the parliamentary panel, headed by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which proposes to make Hindi the medium of instruction in central educational institutes.
Mr. Stalin said, “I request that the efforts to impose Hindi in various ways as recommended in the report may not be taken forward and glorious flame of unity of India may be held high forever.”

He citied that the people who speaks other languages but Hindi are higher in number. He wrote: “Number of people speaking languages other than Hindi is numerically more than Hindi-speaking people in the Indian Union. I’m sure you’d appreciate that every language has its own speciality with its uniqueness and linguistic culture.”
Stalin who has been opposing the ‘imposition of Hindi in southern states’ said that “any state that respects and values their mother tongue” will not accpet.
He said these efforts of imposing of imposing Hindi are divisive and impractical and puts non-Hindi-speaking people in a very disadvantageous position in many respects.
In his letter, Stalin also mentioned that the approach of Union Government is rather include all languages keeping in view scientific development and technological facilities.
“It should promote all languages and keep open avenues of progress in terms of education and employment equal to speakers of all languages,” wrote Stalin.

The proposal of the Centre to make Hindi mandatory has caused a stir in the Southern states who have been considering the move as an attempt to erode regional languages. Following which, they have started to stage protest demanding to do away with the proposal.
In its defense, the Union government said the proposal was made in order to lower the usage of English as official language. This, however, is not acceptable by these states at all.
