New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hit back at former US President Obama over his remarks regarding the security of minorities in India. On Sunday, Sitharaman said that 6 Muslim majority countries were bombed because of Barack Obama.
Finance Minister expressed her disagreement and said, “It was surprising that when the PM was visiting the US, a former US President (Barack Obama) was making statements about Indian Muslims.”
Sitharaman said, “I am speaking with caution, we want good friendship with the United States. But from there come the comments about India’s religious tolerance. Maybe because of him (Obama) 6 Muslim majority countries were bombed.”
Taking on former US President, Nirmala Sitharaman said that from Syria to Yemen, from Saudi to Iraq, a war-like situation was created in 7 countries and 26,000 bombs were dropped. When such leaders comment on India’s religious tolerance, who will take them seriously?
What did Obama say?
Soon after PM Modi and US President Joe Biden addressed a joint press conference in Washington DC, former President Barack Obama made a statement and said if he had a conversation with Modi, he would discuss the rights of ethnic minorities (Muslims) in India.
In an interview with the news channel CNN, Obama said that if he had to talk to Modi, part of his argument would be that if you don’t protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, there is a strong possibility that India will start to separate at some point.
