A 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Bay of Bengal at 6.10 am today, February 25, 2025, the National Center for Seismology reported. As per reports, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 91 kilometers. Tremors were felt in Kolkata, however, there are no immediate reports of casualties or destruction due to the quake as of now.

The earthquake triggered momentary panic among the residents who took to micro-blogging platform X to share their experiences. A user wrote, “Tremors felt in Bhubaneswar At 6:10 am.” Another user said, “I could feel the waves, as my room was shaking at 6:12 am in Rourkela, Odisha.” A third user asked, “Did we just have an earthquake in Kolkata?”
A fourth user noted, “Earthquake felt in Kolkata. Anyone else felt too?” A fifth user said, “Received a Google Earthquake Alert at around 6:10 AM in Kolkata. Reports suggest the epicenter might be 175 km from Orissa. Did anyone else feel the tremors? Awaiting official confirmation. Stay alert and stay safe!” Meanwhile, another user wrote, ‘Earthquake in Kolkata! 5.3 magnitude. Just felt and posting cause awake.”
Recently, on February 17, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit Delhi/NCR at 5:36 am. Strong Tremors lasting a few seconds were felt across the national capital and surrounding areas. The quake caused chaos among people who fled their homes in panic.
