Shyam Benegal No More: PM Narendra Modi And President Droupadi Murmu Pay Tribute

Shyam Benegal, renowned veteran filmmaker, passed away on December 23 at the age of 90. He has left a lasting legacy of several iconic movies and will always be remembered for his contribution to Indian cinema. His demise has left a void in the Indian film industry and several celebrities paid tribute. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute to the late filmmaker and praised his incredible work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Shyam Benegal Ji, whose storytelling had a profound impact on Indian cinema. His works will continue to be admired by people from different walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

President Droupadi Murmu wrote, “The passing of Shri Shyam Benegal marks the end of a glorious chapter of Indian cinema and television. He started a new kind of cinema and crafted several classics. A veritable institution, he groomed many actors and artists. His extraordinary contribution was recognised in the form of numerous awards including Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan. My condolences to the members of his family and his countless admirers.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also praised Shyam Benegal’s work and how it took Indian cinema to new heights. He said, “His contribution to the development and glory of the Indian cinema by recognizing the power of the film medium is invaluable. His works have made Indian films known internationally. The late Benegal, who came from a Karnataka Konkani family, started making films at the age of twelve with a camera gifted by his father, who was a photographer. Many films like Ankur, The Seedling, Manthan, Mandi, Junoon brought an era of realist production to Indian cinema.”

Meanwhile, the news of his demise was confirmed by his daughter Pia Benegal. The filmmaker had celebrated his 90th birthday a few days before his passing.
