Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao, known for his powerful performances in films like Mr and Mrs Mahi, Stree, and Srikanth, is set to portray former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in an upcoming sports biopic. Ganguly himself confirmed the news but mentioned that the film’s release will take time.
Sourav Ganguly Confirms Rajkummar Rao’s Role
During an interaction in Bardhaman, West Bengal, on February 20, Sourav Ganguly revealed that Rajkummar Rao has been chosen to play him in the highly anticipated biopic. He stated:
“From what I’ve heard, Rajkummar Rao will play the role (the titular role)… but there are issues of dates, so it will take more than a year to hit the screens.”
Who Is Sourav Ganguly?
A legendary cricketer, Sourav Ganguly captained the Indian national cricket team and is regarded as one of India’s greatest cricket leaders. Under his captaincy, India secured a historic 2002 ICC Champions Trophy victory. Sourav amassed runs in ODIs, ranking ninth-highest in the world in the format. In 2004, he was honoured with the Padma Shri, India-‘s fourth-highest civilian award.

Rajkummar Rao’s Upcoming Projects
Apart from this sports biopic, Rajkummar Rao has an exciting lineup of films. He will be seen in Bhool Chuk Maaf, co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi, directed by Karan Sharma under Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios. Additionally, he is working on Maalik, produced by Tips Films and Northern Lights Films, set for a June 20, 2025 theatrical release.
