Biplab Goswami, the writer of the film Laapataa Ladies, is upset over people claiming his story is copied from an Arabic short film titled Burqa City (2019). Taking to Instagram and X, Biplab called out the accusations and said these claims are not true and no one even asked him for his side before making such comments.
He shared on social media that he had registered his story, “Two Brides”, way back in 2014 and completed the script in 2018 before Burqa City came out in 2019. Biplab said he only found out about the comparisons recently and was very hurt by them.
Speaking exclusively to HT City, Goswami revealed that he has documentation proving his story’s original registration with the Screenwriters Association in 2014, with the full script registered in 2018 “I had got my story registered with the Screenwriters Association in 2014. I have proof, then the full script was registered in 2018. Koi poocha bhi nahi mujhse. I didn’t know comparisons are being made with Burqa City until Saturday.”
He further stated that the allegations have deeply hurt him and the team “Our Laapataa Ladies team had a chat about these allegations, sab soch rahe the arre yeh kya ho raha hai, everyone was stressed. As a writer, one’s credibility gets affected when something of this sort happens. Kharab lagta hai, aur dukh iss baat pe hota hai ki koi pooch toh leta ek baar. I worked on my story for 10 years. the film’s team worked on it so much. Koi aisa kuchh aake bol deta hai aur sabko lagta hai sahi hai, hawa ka rukh badal jaata hai. It’s very painful.”
Laapataa Ladies had earlier been compared to another film, Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol (1999), but Biplab denies any connection. “I know about this a bit. Honestly, meri khud ki kahaani hai, it has no connection with any other story or novel. Ananth ji ke saath koi lena dena nahi hai. When this too had broken out, I wanted someone to ask me too. There is no basis to these allegations” he clarified.
While Biplab has provided script registration documents as proof, Fabrice Bracq has yet to respond to questions about the timeline clash.
