Karan Johar is one of the most renowned filmmakers and the host of the popular chat show Koffee With Karan. He is always swirling around in headlines and news regarding any of the reasons and now, he has finally addressed the long-standing criticism he gets about promoting nepotism in the film industry.
This all started years ago when actress Kangana Ranaut called him the ‘flagbearer of nepotism’ and a ‘movie mafia’ during her appearance on his show Koffee With Karan.
Karan Johar On Nepotism Claims
During a conversation with Raj Shamani, Karan shared that this label still confuses him. “I don’t know. Like, when did this happen?” he asked, explaining that his father, the late filmmaker Yash Johar was already part of the film industry. “I have always been an insider… because my father was a part of the industry,” he said.
Karan admitted that while his entry was made easier by his father’s name, it still came with its own pressures. “If I had made a flop film, we had to sell our house,” he recalled about his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He added, “My father took a risk on his son.”
He further stated without directly naming Kangana, that, “After the start of Koffee With Karan, I got a strange reputation that I am a certain kind of person.”
When asking about sidelining the talent for Nepotism he clarified, “Here people say that I destroyed someone’s career. No, I didn’t do anything to anyone. I just did my job. This is people’s belief.”
He believes that people are quick to judge without knowing the full story. “When people get to know me closely, they realise the real person I am,” he added.
Karma Over Controversy
Karan concluded by saying that he lives by the principle of karma and tries to avoid hurting others. “Karma is my biggest religion… I feel I should never hurt anyone or come in their way,” he said.
He also pointed out how negativity spreads faster. “If I praise you, no one will see it. But if I badmouth someone, there will be a lot of comments on it,” he added.
