During the 90s, there were strong rumours about Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi dating Indian actor and model Sonali Bendre. It was said that Hum Saath Saath Hai actor was completely smitten by the heartthrob. However, none of the two ever confirmed the relationship.
Years after the rumours died down, Shahid was once again questioned about it during an interview. During a conversation with Arts Council Karachi, Shahid was asked, “Aapki shadi badi jaldi ho gayi thi. But when we were growing up, humko kyun ye pata tha ya humne suna tha ki Sonali Bendre bahut marti thi Shahid AFridi par. Toh ye dosti thi? Unko Aapme koi interest tha? kya haqeeqat thi?” (You got married very early. But when we were growing up, we knew or had heard that Sonali Bendre had a huge crush on Shahid Afridi. So, was it a friendship? Did she have any interest in you? What was the reality?)
Abhi toh aapne nana bana dia tha aur ab nana ki tum baatein shuru karwaa rahe ho. Delete krdo yr (Let’s not dig up old graves past. Please delete it.)
The interview then said, “Theek hai delete kar dete hai, samajhne wale ko ishara hi kaafi hai (Alright, let’s delete it. A hint is enough for those who understand.” Shahid ended the conversation by adding, “Ab hum bade ho gaye hain” (We have now grown up).

It’s not the first time that Shahid has denied any links with Sonali. In an interview earlier, when the interviewer asked if he had ever met her, he replied, “Never! Kabhi Mulaqat nahi hui.” When further questioned about Bollywood actresses, who he was in touch with, Shahid replied, “Phone par baat hoti thi. Tabu se baat hoti thi, wo kaafi fan thi wo bhi hotel ke phone par.”
