Tortured for exorcism
A husband and wife in Mumbai allegedly tortured their domestic help’s two-and-a-half-year-old child in Mumbai’s Bhandup area, police said on Sunday. The husband and wife tortured the child as a process of superstition and extermination of spirits. The seriously injured child has been admitted to Wadia Hospital in Parel for treatment. Following the incident, the Bhandup police have registered a case against the accused couple under the Prevention and Eradication of Black Magic Act and the Child Protection Act along with the Maharashtra Human Sacrifice and other inhuman, wicked and Aghori practices. The couple has been arrested.
The two arrested accused have been identified as Vaibhav Kokre (35) and his wife Harshada Kokre (32), residents of Bhandup West, a senior Bhandup police officer said. They work in water supply near their house. The 37-year-old woman, who had been working with them for the past few weeks, used to bring her younger son along with her during work. The husband and wife reportedly began to suspect that the child was “ghosted” as he used to cry frequently. To “rid him of the ghost”, they started beating him with a cane and burning him with matches. The development went on for about four to five days. Not only was the child a victim of this cruelty, but her mother, who was a domestic help, was also harassed by the husband and wife on the pretext of witchcraft and exorcism.
