It will officially start seven months after the trial. This is another historic moment for Kolkata in terms of the Metro. The first metro system was started in the country in 1984. After this, in 2002, Metro was made operational in Delhi.

On Wednesday, the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) dispatched Metro train number MR-612 to Mahakaran at exactly 11.30 a.m. Whereas, at 11.40 am, the Metro train left for Howrah Maidan from Mahakaran and reached Howrah Maidan at exactly 12 o’clock.

About tunnel

The underwater project in Kolkata has been named the East-West Metro Corridor Project. Under this project, India will have its first underwater metro train very soon. which is going to start in Kolkata. In Kolkata, a tunnel has been constructed under the Hooghly River. Two tunnels have been built under the Hooghly between the East-West Metro corridor and Salt Lake, Howrah Maidan, and Sector V.

The metro train with two to six coaches will cover a distance of 4.8 km between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan as part of the trial run.

About underwater metro

The metro train will run at a speed of 80 km/h in tunnels made by cutting the bed of the Hooghly River. The 16 km-long rail line has 10.8 km of underground sections. That part of the river that is downstream is included in it. This metro train will pass 13 metres below the Hooghly River bed, and the Howrah metro station will also be 33 metres deep.

According to the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, the underground East-West Metro Corridor project will be completed by December. The east-west corridor of the Kolkata Metro is 15 kilometres long. It stretches from Howrah to Salt Lake City Stadium. This metro route from Salt Lake Sector 5 to Salt Lake Stadium will have metro stations at Karunamoyee, Central Park, City Centre, and Bengal Chemical. The project will connect the Esplanade station on the North-South line of the Kolkata Metro with the railway stations of Howrah and Sealdah.
