Delhi Pollution: AQI Drops To ‘Moderate’ After Heavy Rain Brings Relief, CAQM Lifts GRAP 3 Measures – What Lies Ahead?

The Centre's air quality monitoring panel on Friday revoked Stage III measures of the revised Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to favourable weather conditions such as continuous rainfall in the city and adjoining areas.

Heavy incessant rains continued to lash different parts of Delhi early Saturday. This led to the uprooting of trees in various areas of the city. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast isolated to Scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning & gusty winds, blowing at a speed of 30 to 40 kmph today.

The air quality shifted from ‘very poor’ to ‘moderate category on Saturday, with an overall AQI recorded at 189 at 6 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Delhi recorded its highest rainfall in December on Friday, December 27, 2024, in 15 years.

CAQM Revokes GRAP III Measures

The rains brought a significant improvement in Delhi’s air quality. The Centre’s air quality monitoring panel had previously revoked GRAP Stage IV following the improved air quality.

The panel once again on Friday revoked Stage III measures of the revised Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to favourable weather conditions such as continuous rainfall in the city and adjoining areas.

However, the Commission For Air Quality Management (CAQM) confirmed that actions under Stages I and II of GRAP would remain in force.

AQI In Different Parts Of Delhi

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the following AQIs were reported in different parts of Delhi as of 6 am today: Okhla Phase 2 (217), Alipur (164), Rohini (423), ITO (178), Ashok Vihar (194), Shadipur (225), Mundka (231), Jahangirpuri (198), Narela (176), DTU (147), R.K. Puram (195), Anand Vihar (252), Pusa (162), and Punjabi Bagh (214).

What Lies Ahead?

Although Delhi experiences an improvement in air quality, the city’s AQI is expected to fluctuate in the coming days. The impact of the rainfall is likely to reduce over time, with the AQI deteriorating once the weather clears, as per reports.
