Delhi Pollution: Air Quality Drops To ‘Very Poor’, Fog Reduces Visibility; IMD Forecasts Cold Days Ahead

The sharp decline in the air quality has prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to revoke measures under the Graded Response Action Plan Stage III across the national capital.

Delhi Pollution: The air quality slipped to the ‘very poor’ category in Delhi/NCR for the second consecutive day on Saturday. The overall AQI was recorded as 385 at 6 am amid low visibility due to dense fog, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Besides deteriorating AQI, the national capital is currently reeling under severe cold wave conditions with temperature dipping below 10°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cold days ahead across North India. Meanwhile, the sharp decline in the air quality has prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to revoke measures under the Graded Response Action Plan Stage III across the national capital.

GRAP Stage 3 Restrictions

Under GRAP 3, the authorities have imposed a ban on non-essential diesel-operated medium goods vehicles that comply with BS-4 or the older category. The other rules includes switching to hybrid mode up to Class 5.

The contributing factors to the increasing pollution levels include unfavorable weather conditions such as dense fog, low wind speed, emissions from factories, vehicles & other sources, etc.

Will AQI Improve In The Coming Days?

The Centre’s Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi has forecast significant improvement in the air quality in the coming days. However, AQI is likely to remain in the ‘very poor’ category as of now.

AQI In Different Parts Of Delhi

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the following AQIs were reported in different parts of Delhi as of 6 am today: Okhla Phase 2 (453), Alipur (357), Rohini (386), ITO (402), Ashok Vihar (414), Mundka (357), Jahangirpuri (419), Narela (322), DTU (239), R.K. Puram (418), Anand Vihar (480), and Punjabi Bagh (423).
