New Delhi: Delhi Government is planning to implement E-Vehicle Policy 2.0. Delhi’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, started in 2020 to enhance the usage of electrically operated vehicles in the national capital, is about to suspend today.

As per the official notification by the Delhi Transport Department, the validity of the policy from the beginning date – August 7, 2020, had been set to a period of three years, i.e., August 7, 2023.

E-Vehicle Policy, scheduled to end today is likely to be extended by the AAP-led Delhi Government. The idea comes after the Delhi government failed to finalise the new vehicle policy.

The vision of the EV policy

Arvind Kejriwal led government was focused on reaching 25 per cent registration of all new vehicle registrations for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) by the year 2024. The main objective behind the adopted policy was to make sure of the reduction of the harmful emissions from the transport sector; improving Delhi’s air quality.

Did the policy manage to attain the intention?

As reported by the Hindustan Times, the government of Delhi has managed to accomplish its targets described in the EV policy 2020. In terms of figures, the Delhi government has massively attained the goal by 86 per cent of the targets. The figures depict that many people are opting for electric vehicles, which have impacted EV sales in a positive manner over the course of the last three years.

Growth in EV sales

An increase in sales of electric two-wheelers was seen from 1,165 units in 2020 to 34,596 units in the year 2022. Likewise, EV-based three-wheelers saw a hike in numbers from 10,328 units in 2020 to 21,623 units in 2022. In the same manner, the four-wheelers section in the EV sector rose from 886 units in 2020 to 5,641 units during the same period.

Wordings of the officials

Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot took pride in Delhi’s achievements in the EV sector over the last three years. The Minister said that Delhi is coming out as the leading city for electric vehicles in India and looks forward to achieving the title of global EV leader in the next three years.

Furthermore, Ashish Kundra, principal secretary and commissioner (transport) added about government plans about expanding the charging network by providing subsidies in Phase 2.
