A 38-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by men outside a Bengaluru mosque after she was allegedly called to the mosque due to a domestic dispute. The six men involved in this are arrested.
According to the victim, Shabina Banu, at around 2 pm on April 9, she was called, along with her relative Nasreen (32), and a guy called Fayaz, to the Jama Masjid located in Tavarekere. The group allegedly attacked her outside the mosque with sticks, pipes, and a club, and attempted to hit her with stones, apparently with the intention to kill her.
After an uproar over the video, police arrested six people — Mohammad Niyaz, Mohammad Gauspeer, Chand Basha, Inayat Ullah, Dastagir, and Rasool — based on Shabina’s report. In the report, Shabina, who worked as a house help, reported on April 7, Nasreen was a relative who had come to visit her.
The day of the report, both women had gone to a hill on Bukkambudi together and returned that evening after visiting with Shabina’s children. After getting medical advice, Shabina took her medication and laid down, Nasreen, who had previously been about to leave, stayed over. A man, Fayaz had come over too.
Later in the day, Shabina’s husband, Jameel Ahmed Shameer, returned to the house to witness both Nasreen and Fayaz still there. Upset, he allegedly visited Jama Masjid in Tavarekere and filed a complaint. Following this, the three of them, Shabina, Nasreen and Fayaz were called to the mosque where the alleged assault had occurred.
On April 11, Shabina lodged a formal complaint for more than one section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A special investigation team led by Inspector Ravo was formed under the directive of Davangere SP Uma Prashant and Additional SPs Santosh Vijay Kumar and Manjunath and Channagiri ASP Sam Varghese while the accused were traced and arrested soon after.
