What Else For RBI Monetary Policy?

RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee is responsible for setting India’s key interest rates, primarily the repo rate. Moreover, this rate influences borrowing and lending rates across the economy. The MPC consists of six members, three from the RBI, including the Governor, and three external members appointed by the Central Government.

Notably, the MPC meets every two months to assess the economic situation and decide on the monetary policy stance. The main motive of this committee is to maintain price stability while supporting economic growth. The central bank has a target of keeping inflation within the range of 2-6%, with a medium-term goal of 4%.

During each meeting, the MPC evaluates various economic indicators such as inflation, GDP growth, global financial trends, and liquidity conditions. Thereafter, it makes its decision on the key lending rates.

Businesses, investors, and consumers are significantly impacted by the outcome of these meetings. The MPC is responsible for the changes in interest rates to affect loan EMIs, deposit rates, and overall economic activity.

Furthermore, the financial markets of the country also closely track these decisions, as they influence investors sentiment.
