National Manufacturing Innovation Survey Rankings: Karnataka most innovative, while Bihar stands low

New Delhi: A survey conducted by the government’s Department of Science and Technology partnered with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation by the name National Manufacturing Innovation Survey (NMIS) 2021-22 has found Karnataka to be India’s most “innovative” state.

The survey bases its opinion by looking upon the degree of innovation by all the manufacturing firms in India.

The study not only found Karnataka to be the most innovative, but it also noticed the fact that it has the highest number of companies in manufacturing for bringing out new innovations daily.

Numbers defining growth

Karnataka stood first followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Telangana and Tamil Nadu with Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu contributing the highest percentage of innovative firms at 46.18%, 39.1% and 31.9%.

On the other hand, states who stood below in low percentage rate of innovative firms are Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand with 3.47%, 12.78%, and 13.71% respectively.

As per the report, which carried out its survey of over 8000 companies in 28 states and 6 Union Territories, including manufacturing and related service sector along with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs) states that nearly three-fourths of these 8000 firms are neither making any innovative product nor took park in business process innovation during the financial period of 2017-2020.

With quoting numbers of firms that didn’t make any innovative progress it also revealed possible reasons behind it. Due to a lack of internal funds, high innovation costs, and the absence of financing from external sources, the country’s innovation ability suffers.

Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Secretary of the Science and Engineering Research Board (Serb) under the Department of Science and Technology throws light upon the fact that the state rankings and the survey have been conducted so that state as well as central government, as well as industry, should be able to identify the gaps in manufacturing and find out the measures that will help to be on the global page some day.
