Automaker KIA has recently released a statement in which its alleged plans to recall 80,000 vehicles has been approved. The reason behind the recall would be the wiring beneath the front passenger seat, that can over time deteriorate and prevent airbags from deploying properly.
The issue with the wiring can also further cause the side curtain air bags to deploy unintendedly. The issue became apparent from the documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by KIA as Notified by a report from Reuters.
Since this recall only pertains to the US arm of the brand, the recall would include vehicles such as 2023-25 Nireo EV, Plug In Hybrid PHEV and Hybrid vehicles.
KIA seems to be going through constant production issues as in late November as well KIA and Hyundai recalled over 208,000 electric vehicles to fix a transistor in charging control unit. The implication of the issue was that the charging unit could get faulty and stop charging the 12 Volt battery that can restrict the vehicle from functioning properly. This could be a fatal issue since the lack of a 12 volt battery applicability can cause the vehicle to fail while starting or the fail during the airbag deployment.
Proposed Solutions By KIA
As per KIA, the Dealers would inspect the vehicles replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly, as necessary. In addition the dealers would install wiring covers as well. Owners that need to go through with the changes would be informed through letters that would be mailed out to them in March.
News For Indian Users
No KIA platform that is currently being sold in India has been recalled. And hence if you are a KIA owner you don’t have much to worry about. The last Recall from KIA in India was in February 2024, when vehicles produced between 28 February to July 13 , 2023 were recalled. The reason behind the recall was to fix the potential error in the electronic oil pump controller which might have impacted the performance of the SUV in a specified transmission variant.
