New Delhi: According to officials, the Indian Army will procure electric vehicles for selected units and formations to be in line with the government’s overall carbon reduction policy. The purchase, which will be phased in, will replace 25 percent of light vehicles, 38 percent of buses and 48 percent of motorcycles with EVs in the selected units.

Officials said several factors unique to the Indian Army’s use of the vehicles, remote deployment locations and operational deployments were considered before finalizing the plan for the introduction of electric vehicles.

To support the EV ecosystem in Army units, the required supporting infrastructure, including charging points for EVs, will be established. These charging stations will have at least one fast charger and two to three slow chargers, according to officials. In addition, the military also plans to install solar charging stations in a phased manner.

The Indian Army will also fill the existing shortage of buses by purchasing electric buses for selected peacekeeping installations and an initial tender for procurement of 60 buses and 24 fast chargers will be announced soon, according to officials.

In April this year, the Indian Army hosted a showcase of affordable EVs for Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, where manufacturers such as Tata Motors and Revolt displayed their models and reported on the advancements in EV technology.
